Samson Cree Nation Pow Wow
Samson Cree Nation made history January 2006 when they formerly gained control of their own capital funds from the Government of Canada, and created the Kisoniyaminaw (“Our Money”) Heritage Trust Fund, an independent Trust controlled by Samson.
The court order for the transfer of Samson capital moneys represented a culmination of three decades of struggle and determination by Samson Cree Nation to gain control of its own money, a right taken for granted by most Canadians. By the end of December 2006, the fund had increased by $40,897,514 Million with a rate of return of 12.85%. The previous rate of return with funds held by INAC was 4.28%.
“The creation of The Kisoniyaminaw Heritage Trust Fund which gave (Samson) the right to manage (their) own money formerly held by the Government of Canada was gained only through the perseverance of (their) Elders, Chief Victor Buffalo, members of Council and the support of Samson members,” stated Allan Marchment, Chairman of the KTHF.
